What's New at Microform Academic Publishing?

Microform images published online!

Winter 2007 sees the launch of Microform Academic Publishers' British online archives service. The concept is to retain all the comprehensiveness of the traditional microfilm collection while offering researchers the obvious desktop-access advantages of the Internet. The first two collections to be published comprise the audience research reports of the BBC from 1936-1950 and the papers of the Parliamentary Labour Party between 1968 and 1994, the year Tony Blair succeeded as party leader. These are to be followed in 2008 by the organisational and selected private papers in the archives of the Communist Party of Great Britain.

Do you have a publishable idea?

In addition to commissioned titles, many of our new titles arise from the preservation needs of institutions holding special collections. Publications can provide libraries and archives with and effective solution, reducing considerably the cost of preservation projects whilst increasing the accessibility of their resources. By allowing their materials to be published, not only do copyright holders obtain their own professionally produced archive copies, but they do so at a substantial discount, and with royalties paid on each copy sold.

Proposals for projects come from those whose research is archive based, and who may act as special editors, identifying materials from different repositories and writing guides outlining their scholarly significance. We also welcome suggestions from academics to publish smaller collections on CD-ROM, enabling postgraduates and senior undergraduates to become familiar with primary sources such as diaries, correspondence and private papers, manuscripts etc.

For most publishing projects, the microfilming or scanning is done by our Imaging Services division at our studios near Wakefield in Yorkshire. We arrange the collection and timely return of the materials using our own courier. The documents are fully insured against theft and fire while in our possession or in transit. (Full details of our insurance cover can be supplied on request.) Alternatively, where security is an issue or in the case of fragile materials, image capture can be carried out in situ.

If you are responsible for the collection of primary source materials or are aware of such materials whose publication would benefit researchers, either e-mail us with your proposal or contact us at the address below.

Royalties

Microform Academic Publishers take very seriously their obligations under the hundreds of publishing agreements entered into over the years, which they make every effort to discharge. Occasionally, in spite of our best efforts, we find ourselves unable to make a payment due to the lack of a current address for any given rightsholder or, should they have died, their estate. In such cases we would urge either the rightsholder or her/his legal representative to contact us in writing at the address below.
